What is a Google Sitemap?

A Google sitemap is an XML formatted file and it is meant to create a more accurate index and deliver better search results for your website on Google. What is a Yahoo Sitemap?

A Yahoo Sitemap is uploaded directly onto Yahoo's web server. It contains a listing of all URLs (pages) within a website as well as the time the pages were last published. The file is used to inform and direct Yahoo's search engine crawler so that web pages can be discovered and indexed quicker. A Yahoo Sitemap provides additional information to Yahoo about the content of your website that may not otherwise be discovered, such as pages that are not linked from any other page within your website etc.

What is a ROR Sitemap?

ROR (Resources of a Resource) describes your website's content to all search engines. A ROR sitemap helps search engine crawlers to better understand your website's content and to crawl your entire website with ease. It is very similar to a Google sitemap as it is written using the extensible markup language or XML but it has a broader appeal. It is thought to be particularly useful for a range of other search engines including MSN, ASK, Lycos and Altavista.

What is a ROBOTS.TXT file?

When a search engine crawler (or spider) comes to your website, it will look for a special file on your site. That file is called ROBOTS.TXT. This file directs search engine spiders to the parts of your site that you want crawled or indexed. The ROBOTS.TXT is a text file and is placed in your root directory, it lets all web-crawlers/spiders know that your site is 'open for crawling' and points their robots in the right direction. Some reports have suggested that if a robots.txt file is not found in your website's root directory some crawlers will turn back leaving without crawling your site at all.
